Boathouse & park improvements
In cooperation with ANCHOR CONCRETE, our community partners and the City of Kingston we are pursuing the construction of our 30x45 boathouse in the park as well as a new access path and small parking lot on the West side of the Dog Park which will also alleviate street parking for the Dog Park.
Public consultations have been held and City Council has approved moving ahead with the design and planning stages. Surveys have been completed including tree inventory, Archaeological investigations are completed and the area is approved for development.
The next step for us is approval of engineered site layout and engineered building drawings approval by the City Departments for construction.
Check back as we add building renderings and further details to the slide show below.
ANCHOR CONCRETE, will be building our boathouse from environmentally friendly precast sections of building that will be manufactured offsite and a crane will be used on site to lift them into place over the course of a few days. This will result in a much smaller environmental footprint and minimal disruption to the current park recreation areas.
The blue container will also be permanently removed and the park area will be remediated.
Thanks to the generous support of Anchor we are able to construct our boathouse sooner and will be utilizing a homegrown building system! Check out the links to their product page ANCHOR CONCRETE,
ATTRIBUTES OF OUR DESIGN
Footprint - minimal footprint for disturbances to the area around the building. Will be disrupting only 5' around the perimeter and this area will not disturb more trees etc. The typical construction methods require 20' of disturbance around the structure for forms and building,
Speed of build - We have some surprises in store but lets just say construction will be completed in less time than any other structure possible. "Less than a month" is where we will leave it for now... check back or check our social media for more precise build times. We will be pre-assembling the structure, dis-assembling it for transport, staging the materials on-site and completing the on-site build in record time to avoid any disruption to the park and its users. Hopefully you wont even notice it appearing:)
Roof drainage - Being friendly to the area is crucial when it rains as a roof generates more runoff, we will incorporate rain barrels and a funnelling parapet to slow and minimize runoff. future plans may even incorporate a living roof.
Eco-Friendly Materials - materials are sourced here in Kingston and are pre-formed sections of concrete that give the texture and look of real wood, but they will not burn, have no runoff or seepage of preservatives of regular building materials throughout a build process.
OFF- GRID Power - We will not be requiring trenching or stringing power lines to the boathouse. ALL power will be generated though a rooftop solar panel system that will also be hidden by the parapet. This will power the essential lighting and other requirements of the boathouse. Completely off grid.
